Recently we visited Burial Chamber Haunted House Complex, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, located 30 minutes south of Green Bay, only 1.5 hours north of Milwaukee, and well worth the drive from Chicago, IL.  Having been to many haunted houses across the nation, we feel Burial Chamber’s Screampark ranks up there with the BEST we’ve seen.   Visiting Burial Chamber is a must…Their unique approach to scaring, their diversity in their haunted houses, and their professionalism throughout, make Burial Chamber a location to add to your list of places you MUST visit this Halloween season.
OVERVIEW

Overall, our haunt experience at Burial Chamber was fantastic!  They have three completely different and unique haunted house styles all conveniently located on one property.  The operators are very knowledgeable (after all the owner has owned and operated haunted houses for 20+ years), the actors were spot-on, all appeared to be well trained, and every scare was perfectly timed.  There was something for every person in our group, no matter what their horror preference.

We were quite impressed with the attention to detail put forth, and it all starts from the moment your foot exits your vehicle.  Judging from the glowing reviews of their exiting customers, we assumed from the start we were in for an exceptional haunt experience, and as the evening progressed, we were more than pleased as our expectations became reality.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

We decided to get the “Spend the Night Package”, whereby we stay overnight in a nearby hotel (Comfort Suites), and they provide the transportation to Burial Chamber.  This unique and very affordable offer is perfect for out-of-town haunt goers like us.  The hotel was a nice start to the evening, as we were able to check-in, get settled a bit, and then have the hotel transport us directly to the Burial Chamber’s Fastpass line.  Evidently, even in-town haunted house enthusiasts utilize this package when looking for a fun evening out.

We like the fact that they offer timed Fastpass ticketing in addition to standard admission.  The idea of spreading out customers throughout the night is always a novel one if it’s employed properly, and Burial Chamber handled it well by alternating groups and keeping the lines moving and entertaining.

The haunt location is perfect-- just a couple blocks off the expressway, and the multi-beam spotlight to lure you into the premises was a nice touch.  The complex provides ample space for their 2 indoor haunted houses plus a sizeable wooded trail.  The lines moved smoothly and the wait experience kept us entertained with roaming actors, multiple jumbotron video screens, as well as full concessions (including my favorite…mini doughnuts) and souvenirs to commemorate the horrific fun.

Wisconsin Haunted Houses

TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT

Like most haunted houses in Wisconsin or Illinois or across the nation, Burial Chamber only operates during the Halloween season.  However, the haunted complex remains setup year round.  According to Matt Mars, owner of Burial Chamber, “This allows us to work on growing the complex continually throughout the year.  The sheer size of the place would require an army of people to disassemble and reassemble every Halloween season, but by keeping it up year-round, everyone is able to benefit.  We are able to include scares and scenes that only permanent locations typically can.”  Based on his preference and building style, Mars says he wouldn’t even consider doing a haunted house that is temporary.  “The amount of time and effort put into deconstructing and reconstructing could be focused on improving.  And simply put, that is Burial Chamber’s focus…constant improvement.”

ADRENALINE HAUNTED HOUSE

Burial Chamber’s first haunted house is Adrenaline, which described by Mars as an “old school, in-your-face, pop-out-from-everywhere, dark-scare haunted house.”  That about sums it up!  With an “under attack” military and zombie theme, Adrenaline plays off of people’s fear of dark and cramped places and utilizes high energy scare actors to attack from all angles, along with many automated startle scares.  The scare actors inside look phenomenal, both realistic and believable, as if they were real zombies coming from a post-apocalyptic attack.  The different uses and styles of startle-scares along with the up-beat, thematic background sounds & music quickly instills a nervous tension in all guests who dare enter Adrenaline.  The lighting levels are low and fog are levels high, yet the balance is so perfect that the detailed scenes are very believable and obviously well thought out, allowing the actors ample room for their attacks and interaction with each group of customers.

Adrenaline’s varied attack keeps customers on high alert as they’re assaulted by crawlers on the floor, from the sides and hidden passages, the ceilings, and even actors from above aggressively slamming sparking chains near customers’ heads.  It’s nearly impossible not to flinch when you feel you’re truly “under attack”, and Burial Chamber’s Adrenaline did just that.  Our group loved the tight, aggressive interactive-style.  While the actors inside Adrenaline aren’t character-actors performing skit-style interactions, they may have been the scariest haunted house actors we’ve encountered in a while.  They did a fantastic job at leaving the entire group uneasy and nervous at all times.  As a haunt guest inside Adrenaline, you never know where they’ll be coming out from next.  As customers exit, their hearts are racing, they’re grabbing at their chest, and they’re trying hard to catch their breath.  It’s no mystery why they called it Adrenaline.

ADRENALINE HAUNTED HOUSE

INSANITY HAUNTED HOUSE

Next we went to Burial Chamber’s second indoor haunt, Insanity Haunted House.  According to Mars, “Insanity Haunted House is a combination of a haunted house mixed with Fun House elements.  It’s a twisted world of unique creatures and environments.  It’s an experience for your mind.”  Once inside, we experienced spinning rooms, disorienting lighting effects, crooked rooms, claustrophobia walls, collapsing rooms and clown rooms, all with an eerie abandoned Fun House vibe.  They even incorporate scents & odors in some of the scenes to really immerse us into their insane chaos and haunted environment.  Lighting levels are higher in Insanity showcasing the great detail that goes into their thematic elements of each room and the house as a whole.

We love the interaction inside Insanity.  The feeling of being trapped in an old Fun House comes complete with midget clowns, several unique illusions, air blasts, disorienting sounds, and strategically placed dark areas that “grab” you.  In one scene, a scare actor cuts a body into pieces and the blood from his work sprays onto the crowd.  All five senses are on high alert inside Insanity Haunted House.

PHOBIA HAUNTED WOODS

Phobia Haunted Woods is an outdoor haunted trail and a fan-favorite.  The integration of themed buildings and detailed sets alongside thick, growing woods gives this trail a realistic quality unlike any other.  Phobia makes you feel as if you’re immersed in a horror movie, with that on-edge feeling like you can’t trust anyone or anything and you must run for your life to get out alive.  We loved the blending of nature vs. man with wild “animals”, far-off sounds of attacks, nature and haunted creatures spread throughout the haunted woods.  The woods have a naturally eerie feeling to them, including a foggy pond, uneven terrain, massive trees and thick vegetation that sets the horror movie vibe perfectly.

We loved the actors inside Phobia.  They have a unique interaction style with quick wit and ability to respond quickly.  The blending of characters throughout the woods creates continual distraction as you walk through decrepit buildings, deer trail paths, and areas infested with spider webs and other live inhabitants.  The utilization of ghillie suits in wooded environment works amazingly well when you have actors as well-trained as Phobia’s.  We also liked the uneasy feeling of being followed and chased by some of the inhabitants as well as the inhuman sounds that came out of the creatures roaming the woods.

STAFFING AND COSTUMING

Burial Chamber does an amazing job with realistic makeup and costuming.   Their haunt characters looked good enough to be TV-ready.  Some looked like they just walked off the set of a Walking Dead episode.  With 125 scare actors per night, it’s incredible that the characters can be so believable.  Matt responded, “We utilize very few masks.  It’s important that customers can appreciate the actors’ expressions as they scare.  We want the customers to have a suspended sense of reality and really believe that these characters are real and dangerous.  It’s a testament to the amazing skills of our makeup staff and actors.  Without them, Burial Chamber wouldn’t be the immersive experience that it is today.”

According to Mars, Burial Chamber employs a “Ghoul School” for training the actors prior to the season to ensure that they are equipped to properly scare the customers.  The time and effort spent on character building and actor training is certainly worthwhile.  The actors are both well trained and perfectly costumed to look the part, each with different noises, movements and attack styles.  It was refreshing to see such acting range and perfect scare timing with each haunt experience inside each haunt attraction at Burial Chamber.
